HumaneWatch has promoted the following pet shelters in its "Humane Bites" feature. We make no guarantees about how these shelters are operated, and we don't distinguish between "kill" and "no-kill" shelters. For former HSUS donors looking for a reliable place to direct their charitable dollars, this is a good place to start.

In our judgment, consumers looking to support the rehabilitation and adoption of the dogs and cats in the Humane Society of the United States's ads would be well advised to donate to one of these shelters, instead of to HSUS itself. Funding for hands-on pet shelters at the local level is something in which (despite its name) HSUS has sadly shown very little interest. In 2008, HSUS set aside less than one-half of one percent of its budget for organizations like these.
