SHAME ON TEXAS

Sir, it has come to my attention that on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, your Animal Care Services Assistant Director Vincent Medley, removed 19 Dogs from a home seizure.  Removing the Dogs after months, even  a year of knowledge about the abuse these dogs were receiving;  you would think the “HUMAINE” thing to do would be remove them yes?…… But no Assistant Director Vincent Medley seemed more interested in creating a scene  for the media. He and his staff further traumatized the 19 dogs by using catch poles “DRAGGING” them across  the street instead of using crates to remove them.

In my opinion this was a set up for the media cameras. Any person, I refuse to use the word human, as his actions were not humane; that would further traumatize these dogs needs to be fired immediately.

Further, It is my opinion, that instead of releasing these dogs to a non kill shelter, that some drummed up "issue" that requires immediate euthanasia will be used  instead of holding the dogs for the duration of the investigation.

Mayor Castro, "YOUR"  ACS has a documented history of abusive handling of animals under Medley's leadership. Please, instruct ACS Director Kathy Davis to charge Vincent Medley with animal cruelty and to immediately fire him and the assistants that participated  in this shameful event.

Also ask the that the dogs be evaluated by an independent vet before euthanizing them.

Mayor Castro remember what Mahatma Gandhi said "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the manner in which its animals are treated"

So can the greatness of a Texas City, Lets keep Texas Great.

I have lost 9 cats since I moved to Missouri. I was heartsick when I finally found out what was killing them...cytauxzoonosis, or “bobcat TICK fever. What the heck is that you may ask.  It is a sickness that was discovered in 1967 in Missouri. It consists of a disease carried by ticks who have bitten a Bobcat then bites a domestic cat. Death rate was 99.99 % in Missouri and nothing less then 90% in all other states it has been found in.

I had decided not to allow another cat into my life, it hurts when they die and it is a horrible death. The vital organs inside the cat die off causing a painful death.

One night at about 3 am I heard this soft kitten cry out side of my RV.. Crap, another kitten has been dropped off out here on our country road. that was about 4 years ago. I did not get her fixed in time and had two different litter of kittens one of the kittens had a litter, and now I have ten cats.  but when you take kittens to a city run animal shelter .. something like 80% are put to sleep instead of being adopted so.. I couldn't take them to a shelter.  What could I do to protect my cats? It seemed simple but with ten cats if you keep them inside there would be a horrible smell even if the litter boxes were emptied every day.. (In the course of all this I got a rent to own storage building converted it into a home.) The answer was simple let the cats be outside.. but what about the BOBCAT FEVER?  

I built a CAT RUN...

I use tick dust all over my yard so that none can get inside the pen. and the cats access it via an open window in my kitchen.

COLUMBIA, Mo. ­—Lone Star ticks, which are notorious carriers of many diseases including cytauxzoonosis, or “bobcat fever,” have been spreading across the nation in recent years. As a result, cats across much of the country are now exposed to the deadly disease. University of Missouri veterinarian Leah Cohn, a small animal disease expert, and Adam Birkenheuer from North Carolina State University, have found an effective treatment for the dangerous disease.
“Previous treatment methods have only been able to save less than 25 percent of infected cats, but our method, which is now being used by veterinarians across the country, has been shown to save about 60 percent of infected cats,” Cohn said. “While that number isn’t as high as we’d like due to the deadly nature of the disease, our method is the first truly effective way to combat the disease.”

Help Us Keep The Dogs Safe And Healthy by Sandra Jensen

In December I wrote news of the critical situation for nine dogs living in horrifically inadequate conditions for winter in Sarajevo. Thanks to generous donations we funded the building of warm sleeping crates for the dogs.

However, we continued to worry about the dogs, as it was not easy to ensure they were being fed or cared for properly. They all have lowered immune systems due to demodex (mange) or canine parvovirus and other conditions. We decided to transfer all the dogs to a better pension. Ensar, who manages the new pension is a vet. We already are sponsoring three dogs there, and they are doing very well. Grace (right), one of the dogs rescued from the horror shelter of Hreša, was so emotionally traumatised and terrified of people, we feared she would never recover. But now she is doing much, much better.

This is a big decision: the new pension, costs 90 Euros per month per dog (about $120), while the other pension cost 45 euros for young dogs, or 70 euros for adult dogs. We already are sponsoring 3 dogs at Ensar's, and an additional 9 dogs means the monthly cost for these dogs alone is 1080 Euros (about $1500 USD) per month.

All these dogs are up for adoption. We feel it is imperative to make sure they are healthy and as happy as can be possible in a 'pension' (it's impossible to foster dogs in Bosnia, only animal welfare activists foster, and they are full up with rescues).

WOW, I'd never think a mouse talked to another mouse... Did you? I might need to change my diet!


Mouse mothers emit ultrasound vocalizations and odor cues to stimulate otherwise uninterested fathers to provide parental care to their pups.

 Non-monogamous male lab mice are not natural fathers, but they do provide parental care when housed together with their mates and pups for a few days. Now, scientists in Japan have demonstrated that when both parents are separated from the pups, the mother communicates through ultrasonic vocalisations (USVs) and odor cues to stimulate the father to provide parental care when the offspring are returned. So it seems that when the mother fears for her pups, she tells the father to get involved.

What have you done for the deserted, homeless, helpless and hungry animals this past year? What will you do to help them next year?

"Helpless Animals" is not a individual country's problem but a world wide, planetary problem. What laws protect sentient  beings. But what is a sentient being... Well, break the words down, "SENTIENT" means, conscious, alert, attentive, awake, responsive.  A "BEING" means, life form, organism, creature, living being, human being, person, individual, mortal.

What separates a human from any other animal?  The ability to communicate. What is communication?  the dictionary states: to converse, talk, speak, exchange a few words, commune, be in touch, correspond, write, be in contact.

Other animals communicate. How you ask? They exchange sounds, they use body language, tail wags, hair stands on end, they raise their backs to give a bigger impression of themselves, they sniff each other, they clean and manicure each other. They leave their scent so others of thier kind can find them or stay away.

They form family groups. Protect their territory. 

Some people say this is instinct, but most  animals can be taught, so there is some intelligence to learn. Do we think less of their means of communication because we don't understand it?  Is this the problem of the animal, or humans? 

We consider ourselves humane, but what humane individuals sets a dog on fire for the fun of it, or shoots a cat or cooks a live kitten in a microwave, throws a dog into traffic, a man beats his wife's dog to death with his bare hands because of a fight they had and all because we can.

 

 Internationally, or each country has laws protecting each human from the mischief and malice of other individuals, but what laws protect the other sentient beings on earth?

Human compassion should protect them but it doesn't. Make Laws to protect all sentient beings.

Now the question is what will you do this year to help the other sentient beings of this planet? Donate food, blankets, bedding? 

Pick a group that is interested in helping others and do what you can. Not everything involves money.

I have picked two additional groups to help this year.

1. Lets adopt global - http://blog.myletsadopt.com/  it is in Spain and Viktor helps UN-helpable animals survive and get well. He does this on individual gifts. Some say each one of the animals he helps are so bad off thery should be put down, Viktor believes that as long as an animal fights for life they should be helped to live. We don't put down humans, we shouldn't put down an animal if at all possible.

2.  IN MEMORY OF VUČKO     raising awareness and funds to stop animal suffering in Sarajevo and Bosnia-Herzegovina.  http://inmemoryofvucko.wordpress.com/

I don't have a lot of money but I'm sewing dog blankets and sleeping pads and coats. These items are being sent to Bosnia-Herzegovina twice a month.  They desperately need money to buy food and veterinarian services and shelter.


Please consider adopting a group even a dollar a month can help provide food for the starving or shelter for the cold and homeless.

#Suffering in Sarajevo

On Christmas eve a dog was found dead and brutalized by hunters. This is a very common occurrence. Why do they do it? Because they can.

This poor dog was one of many strays that the animal welfare activists in Sarajevo feed:

There are over 11,000 strays in Sarajevo. Winter is a terrible time for them with temperatures hitting minus 20 or worse, and as always there are so many who are ill or wounded. Jelena Paunovic and other animal welfare activists make daily trips to feed the strays. Last winter in Sarajevo the snow was almost two meters high and every day they would find many dogs and cats dead on the streets, dead from starvation or frozen to death. Funds are desperately needed to pay for food.

            

And it is not just the dogs.

 

This is one of several stray cats near a farm in Sarajevo. The people who feed them do not have anything other than bread to feed the cats. Cats cannot live on bread. Jelena went there to give them some cat food. She discovered that there are 3 females who give birth every year. Spaying costs 40 euros (about $55 USD) and the cheapest cat food costs 1,5 EUR per kilogram. A contribution of 120 Euros (about $165 USD) will mean that dozens of kittens will not be born to suffer a life of neglect, starvation and abuse. Please help.

The rescues at this particular pension in Sarajevo have no heating. There are nine dogs at this pension, most of them quite young. Marley and Tessa are outside (with a dogs house to sleep in, but no heating) and all the others are sleeping in a garage. It is VERY cold, temperatures already going down to minus 10 and it will get much colder. Jelena Paunović couldn’t take many photos because her fingers were frozen.  What is worse is that all the dogs are very unwell with demodex and lowered immune systems. These are the dogs that survived canine parvovirus and Tessa, one of the dogs, barely survived pneumonia and has an enlarged heart. See “Things Are Not Good In Sarajevo“.

If we can’t find a solution the dogs may not survive the winter. I am not sure what the solution can be. The only suitable pension is King Pension and there is no space there. Perhaps we can raise funds for blankets, straw, or even for electric heating to be brought into the garage. I’m working on this and will update but funds are needed to get these dogs through the winter, at the very least with very high quality food. Jackets for each dog cost around 40 Euros ($USD 50) unless they can be mailed over, but this can take up to 6 weeks from the USA.
